94-Year-Old Resident Died at Marshalltown Soldier's Home
One of Madison county's oldest citizens, Mrs. James Welch, died last Saturday at the Iowa Soldier's home in Marshalltown. She was 94 years of age.
Mrs. Welch had been a resident of Winterset and Madison county for 60 years, and was widely known here. She had been totally blind since 1931, and had been at the Marshalltown home since last September. For eight years prior to that she had made her home with her foster daughter, Mrs. Ed Orris of Peru.
Mrs. Welch was the former Mary A. Reece, daughter of John and Jane Reece, and was born in Tippicanoe county, Indiana. When she was two years old she came with her parents to Louisa county in this state, and in 1884 she came to Winterset.
Her husband, James Welch, died here many years ago.
She is survived by five foster children. They are: John Welch of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Margaret Babbitt of Creston, Mrs. Edith Daggett of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Lucy Orris of Peru, and Blanche Welch of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held here from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. L. F. Davis of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Mary A. Welch, resident of Winterset and Madison county for nearly sixty years, died early Saturday morning, march 11, at the State Soldiers’ hospital at Marshalltown, Iowa She was 94 years old.
Funeral services were held in the Ramsey-Richards Funeral Home here at two p.m. Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis and interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
Mary Alice Reece was born on July 16, 1849, in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, daughter of John and Jane Reece. When she was three years old the family came to Iowa in a covered wagon, and located in Louisa county, near Columbus Junction.
She married John Wren on January 1, 1868. They lived in Kansas two years, and returned to Iowa where Mr. Wren died. She came to Winterset in 1884. On July 16, 1892, she was married to James H. Welch, who died on June 21, 1913. She continued to live in Winterset until 1931, when she was stricken with blindness. Since 1937 she has been cared for in the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. Lucy Orris near Peru, until last September she was taken to Marshalltown. She was a member of the Women’s relief Corps and the Church of Christ.
She is survived by her step-children, John Welch of Glendale, California; Mrs. Margaret Babbitt of Creston; Mrs. Edith Daggett of Tampa, Florida; Mrs. Lucy Orris of Peru, and Miss Blanche B. Welch of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews in this state.
