MOTHER DIES IN CHILD BIRTH

21-Year-Old Patricia Kirk Is Survived By Infant Son

An eight hour battle to save the life of a young Madison county mother failed Saturday morning at Madison County Memorial hospital when Mrs. Patricia Kirk, wife of Max Kirk, died following the birth of her first child, a son.

Mrs. Kirk, the former Patricia Travis, gave birth to a son shortly before midnight. The birth was a normal one, but complications arose shortly thereafter. Following several blood transfusions Mrs. Kirk appeared to rally, and then again collapsed. This time her heart failed, but prompt action in opening the chest and massaging the heart restored heart action again. Meanwhile specialists had been summoned and arrived from Des Moines but at 7:30 a third relapse was fatal.

The child is reported in normal condition and doing well.

Mrs. Kirk was formerly secretary at the Madison County P.M.A. office. Her husband, now farming near Lorimor, was formerly employed at the Jackson Conoco station here.

The couple had been living on a farm near Lorimor recently.

Patricia Irene Kirk was born near Peru on April 30, 1936, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Travis. Most of her life was spent in this county, and she was a member of the Peru Methodist Church.

On Nov. 25, 1955, she was married to Max Kirk, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kirk.

Mrs. Kirk is survived by her husband, the infant son, Stephen Travis Kirk; her parents, and a sister, Mary Ann Travis.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon Aug. 4 from the Peru Methodist church, with the Rev. Ray Harness of Chariton officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer cemetery south of Peru.
