STEWARD DOWLER DIED LAST WEEK
Pioneer Resident of This County Was 91 Years of Age
Steward R. Dowler, pioneer resident of Madison county, died at the Harkin hospital in Osceola Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the age of 91 years. Mr. Dowler had been in failing health for some time, but his condition became critical a short time ago, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The son of John and Martha Dowler, he was born near Greenfield, Penn., May 21, 1852. He came from Pennsylvania to Iowa as a boy of 14 years, and with the exception of two years spent in Kansas, Madison county has since been his home. For many years he was a successful South township farmer and stock raiser.
He was married to Miss Sarah Hogg, Nov. 1, 1882, and they were the parents of six children. His wife and two children, Grace Young and Steward Earl have preceded him in death. He is survived by three sons and one daughter, Charles, Maud Hiatt, Asa and Elmer. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Will Porter of Truro.
Early in life Mr. Dowler united in membership with the Christian church in Peru and later attended the Methodist church at Elm Grove. He was a man of sterling character and held in high esteem by a number of friends. Another of the county's sturdy pioneers has gone.
Funeral services were held from the Kale funeral home in Truro, Feb. 3, with the Rev. James A. Worrell of the Methodist church conducting the service, and interment was made at St. Charles.
