Resident of Winterset for 67 Years; Was 87 Years of Age
Mrs. Rettie M. Greer, a resident of Winterset for 67 years, died here on Wednesday of last week. She was 87 years of age.
Mrs. Greer was born Feb. 21, 1857, in Cambridge, Ohio, the daughter of Cristopher and Sarah Smith. In 1870 she moved with her parents to Topeka, Kan. Six years later she came to Winterset, which had since been her home.
She was married Jan. 20, 1881, to Marcus B. Green, who died in 1886. On May 28, 1889, she was married to James L. Greer. He died in 1936.
Mrs. Greer had taught three terms in the rural schools of this county. She joined the Presbyterian church upon coming to Winterset, later transferring to the Methodist church. She was a member of the Pitzer Woman's Relief corps for 57 years, serving as secretary of that chapter for 28 consecutive years. She also served one year as state secretary of the organization.
Her nearest surviving relative is a niece, Mrs. Clara A. Young of Chicago.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church last Friday in charge of the Rev. Mr. Talley, former pastor here. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
