DOROTHY H. SMITH DIED EARLY TUESDAY

Life of Young Woman Ends at 32 Years After Brief Illness

Dorothy H. Smith, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed M. Smith of Winterset, died at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines Tuesday morning after a week's illness. Death was due to a heart ailment and complications. She was 32 years of age.

Miss Smith was one of the most widely known young people of this community, where most of her life was spent. She was born in Winterset on Aug. 21, 1911. She attended the Winterset schools, graduating from the local high school with the class of 1929. She continued her education at Lindenwood college in Missouri, Grinnell college at Grinnell, and the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, where she graduated in 1933 with a B.A. degree. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority, and Theta Sigma Phi, honorary Journalistic society.

After leaving school she spent a number of years in secretarial work, being employed at the state house in Des Moines, in Oklahoma City, and in Phoenix, Ariz. At various times she had served on the staff of the Madisonian, of which her father is editor and publisher. Since last September she had been teaching in the commercial department of the Patterson high school.

In addition to her parents, Miss Smith leaves her three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Moore, Jr., of Winterset, Mrs. P. K. Graening of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Wesley L. Fry of Evanston, Ill.; and seven nephews and nieces: John Edward Gorman of Winterset, David, Jane and Gretchen Graening of Oklahoma City, and Jimmie Wes, Teddy and Merrie Ann Fry of Evanston.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Winterset Presbyterian church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Arthur Mortenson. Burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
