Walter A. Kerns, Macksburg

MACKSBURG-The funeral of Walter A. Kerns, 89, who died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday in his rural Macksburg home will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home in Creston.

The Rev. Don Hansen will officiate. Visitation will start at 8 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Jerusalem. A memorial will go in the heart fund.

Mr. Kerns was born July 3, 1891 in Madison County to Albert and Catherine (Longnecker) Kerns. He married Mary Caroline Wiesseman March 24, 1920 in Creston. She died Aug. 24, 1976. He farmed in the Macksburg and Creston area before his retirement. Mr. Kerns was a World War I Army veteran, who served at Fort Flagler in Washington and in France.

He was a member or the Macksburg International Order of the Odd Fellows for 67 years and a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church.

His survivors include a daughter, Olive Kerns of Macksburg; two sons, Wayne Kerns of Macksburg and the Rev. Clair Kerns of Villisca; four grandchildren, Robert of Boston, Mass, Thomas of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Donald of Boone and Susan of Wisdom, Mont.; three cousins and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he also was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Orin and Verlin Kerns.
