Gerald W. Kerns, Murray

Gerald Walter Kerns, 76, of rural Murray died of cancer Sept. 13,2000, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 18, at the Church of Christ in Murray with the Rev. Brian McCracken officiating. Burial was at Murray Cemetery.

Gerald Kerns was born Oct. 21, 1923 to Verlin LeRoy and Fern (Bond) Kerns of Macksburg. He received his education in the Macksburg and Lorimor schools. He married Edith Hendrickson on Nov. 2, 1947 in Des Moines. Gerald was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines and Japan. He retired in 1977 from Armstrong Tire in Des Moines. Having lived the majority of his life in the Murray area, he also farmed. He was a member of the Murray Church of Christ, Clarke County Sheriff's Posse, Disabled American Veterans (Iowa Chapter No. 20) and William-Lochrie American Legion Post 405 in Murray.

He was preceded in death by his father, three brothers and a brother-in-law.

He is survived by his wife; his mother of Hawkeye; two daughters, Mary Smith (husband Marion) of Lorimor and Betty Babinat (husband Joe) of Marshalltown; two sons, Gary Kerns and Bill Kerns (wife Julia) both of Murray; a sister, Dolores Henderson of Hawkeye; two brothers, Merl Kerns (wife Ann) of Macksburg and Ron Kerns (wife Van) of Winterset; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Kerns of Pahrump, Nev., and Madelyn Kerns of Winterset; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Murray Church of Christ or the Integrated Health Services Activity Fund in Winterset.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Home in Osceola.
