Fern O. Kerns, 98, of Winterset died from complications of pneumonia Sept. 30, 2000 in Hawkeye.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Oct. 4) from 3-8 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery.
Fern Kerns was born Aug. 6, 1902 in Madison County to Burt and Olive (Smith) Bond. Her marriage to Verlin LeRoy Kerns took place Aug. 7, 1920, in Madison County. As well as being a homemaker, she had worked at Madison County Memorial Hospital for 18 years as an aide and lab helper. She also had been a cashier at the Starlight Stop in Winterset, retiring at the age of 82. She had resided in Madison County until 1991, when she moved to Hawkeye. Fern was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both in Winterset and the Kasson Friendship Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sons, a son-in-law, three sisters, a brother, three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Dolores Henderson of Hawkeye; two sons, Ron Kerns (wife Val) of Winterset and Merl Kerns (wife Ann) of Macksburg; three daughters-in-law, Edith Kerns of Murray, Marjorie Kerns of Pahrump, Nev., and Madelyn Kerns of Winterset; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Methodist Church in Winterset.
