MORTUARY - C. A. Poindexter

Charles Allison Poindexter was born in Forsythe county, North Carolina on June 4th, 1845. He died at his home in Jackson township on the evening of July 11, 1931, aged 86 years.

Mr. Poindexter came of the hardiest American stock but sickness and death left him a homeless boy at the age of seventeen. The civil war was on and he enlisted in the Confederate Army serving under Lee in the army of Virginia. In his 16 months of service he saw the hardest of that bitter struggle in the wilderness campaign. He was taken prisoner at the fall of Richmond just previous to Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

At the close of the war after a visit to his boyhood home he emigrated to Illinois. He settled on a farm near Bloomington. In the early 70’s he married Miss Lucinda Futhoy, who died on December 29, 1891. In early spring of 1893 he came to Iowa and settled near Winterset. On October 26, 1893 he married Miss Bessie Dean who is the mother of four of his children and who through his last years of his helplessness with utter devotion gave him such unfailing and loving care as to prove herself one of God’s best women.

Mr. Poindexter was the father of seven children, a child who died early in his first marriage, Jesse E. Poindexter of Dix, Nebraska; Chester A. Poindexter of Moscow, Idaho; Mrs. Flossie L. Boyce, Ray Poindexter, Mrs. Gladys V. McDonald, who died November 10, 1930, and Neil H. Poindexter of Winterset. There are sixteen grandchildren.

He professed faith in Christ as his redeemer shortly after coming to Illinois and united with the U. B. church of Dry Grove near Bloomington. He brought his letter with him to Winterset and united with the United Presbyterian church under the ministry of Rev. J. H. White. When he bought his farm in the Pitzer neighborhood he transferred to that congregation among whom he is held in high esteem.

His was an extraordinary attractive personality. The melodious softness of the Southern tongue, mellowed his speech. The royal courtesy of Cavalier ideals marked his manners. The lively sports of his boyhood brightened his life to old age.

Funeral services were held at U. P. church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. J. Stewart former pastor of Grinnell preached the sermon.
