Wednesday, February 2, 1955EPHRIAM H. LOW - Oldest Resident Died on Monday
Madison county lost one of the last of its pioneer residents Monday, Jan. 21, 1955, in the death of Ephriam H. Low. He died at the home of his granddaughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hern in Winterset.
Mr. Low had celebrated his ninety-ninth birthday last Nov. 28. He had lived in Madison county since the pioneer days of 1857.
Mr. Low was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, On Nov. 28, 1855, a son of Samuel and Malinda Low. When he was 18 months of age he came to Iowa with his parents, in a covered wagon. They settled on a farm in Jackson township, where he spent his early life. The remainder of his life was spent in Madison and Clarke counties, except for 11 years at Harrisonville, Mo.
On Nov. 13, 1881, he was married to Eunice Hatch. They were parents of 10 children, two of whom died in infancy. The wife and mother died in 1930, and two other children also preceded the father in death.
He was later married to Mary Davis who survives him. He also leaves six children, Mrs. Julia Platt and Henry and William Low of Winterset, Mrs. Mamie Jacobe of Lorimor, Harvey Low of Osceola, and Mrs. Josephine Alcorn of Red Top, Mo.; also 27 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Winterset Church of Christ, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Warren Hile. Burial was to be made in the Winterset cemetery.
