Pioneer Woman Had Lived in County Three Quarters of Century.

Mrs. Laura A. Mease, a pioneer resident of Madison county, died last Friday at the Buchanan Nursing home in St. Charles. She was 83 years of age, and had been in rapidly failing health the past six weeks.

Mrs. Mease had lived in Madison county for three quarters of a century. She was the former Laura Ann Howe, daughter of John and Nancy Howe, and was born March 7, 1862, near Leesburg in Fayette county, Ohio. When she was seven years old she came to this county with her parents. They settled on a farm in Ohio township, west of Truro, and she resided there until her marriage. She has been a member of the Methodist church since she was a girl. She was married March 25, 1880 to John C. Mease, and they located on a farm near Peru. They were the parents of six children. One daughter died in infancy; and one son, William Martin, died at the age of 17 years. Her husband died October 7, 1935, and for the past 10 years she has resided with her children.

She is survived by two sons, Wilbur V. Mease of Broken Bow, Neb., and Grover C. Mease of Peru; two daughters, Mrs. Nettie M. Purvis of Truro, and Mrs. Alma H. Spera of Winterset; six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 29 at 3 p.m. at the Peru Methodist church in charge of the Rev. J. C. Moore of Leon. Burial was made in the Ebenezer cemetery.
