FRED E. FICKES Dies In Crash

Former Winterset Resident Killed Last Saturday in Missouri

Fred E. Fickes, formerly of Winterset, was killed last Saturday near Independence, Mo., when the oil transport truck he was driving crashed with an auto at a highway intersection. The accident occurred when the brakes on his truck failed.

Mr. Fickes was 29 years of age. He was a son of Mrs. Florence Simpson of Winterset, and spent his early life in this community, attending the Winterset schools. He was married June 11, 1944, to the former Evelyn Steen of Winterset, and they were parents of four children. Their present home is in Ft. Des Moines.

During World War II he served as a gunner in the U. S. Naval Air corps.

Near surviving relatives include his wife and the four children, Tommy, 9, Christina, 5, Timothy Fred, 3, and Cynthia, 2; his mother of Winterset; and a sister, Mrs. Richard Barr of Wooderist, N.J.

Funeral services were held in Des Moines Tuesday, and burial made in the Masonic cemetery there.
