Andrew Sawyers, prominent Madison county farmer whose death Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, was reported in the Madisonian last week, was a native of Ohio, where he was born in Monroe county, May 11, 1865. He was 81 years old.

Mr. Sawyers was the son of George and Margaret Sawyers. In 1880, when he was 15 years old, he came with his family to Iowa. They settled on what is now known as the Everett Drake farm in Madison county.

He farmed in Madison and Adair counties all his life, and became one of the prominent and successful livestock farmers of his community.

On March 24, 1897, he was married to May Pope. Three years later they moved to the farm where he lived until his death. They were the parents of three sons.

About 55 years ago he became a member of the Christian church, when services were held in the Drake school house. In 1916 he transferred membership to the Winterset Church of Christ, and had been an elder there since 1922. He was active in the building of the present church structure here.

Mr. Sawyers is survived by his wife, three sons, Clare and Raymond Sawyers of Winterset and Carl Sawyers at home; two brothers, George Sawyers of Greenfield and Sam Sawyers of Broadwater, Nebr.; a sister, Mrs. Alice Wilinson of Broadwater, Nebr; and one grandson.

Funeral services were held here last Thursday from the Church of Christ, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Wilbur Watkins. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
