ROY R. THORNBURG, Patterson

Roy Raymond Thornburg, 79, of Patterson died of a heart ailment Dec. 4, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 10, at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset with the Rev. John Shaull officiating. Burial was at Montpelier Cemetery, Patterson, with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Roy Thornburg was born April 9, 1922, to H. Ray and Marie (Sheets) Thornburg of Adel. He married Ida Evelyn Mares on April 19, 1946, in Clovis, N.M. He had worked for Firestone Tire in Des Moines before starting his own construction company. Roy had spent most of his lifetime around the Patterson area where he had served as councilman for the town of Patterson for many years. He also was an Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by three sons, Ron Thornburg (wife Linda) of Forest Lake, Minn., Rick Thornburg (wife Kathy) of Winterset and Jerry Thornburg (wife Christy) of Earlham; a daughter, Pasty Bence (husband Mark) of Winterset; three brothers, Lester Thornburg of Garden Grove, Cecil Thronburg of Des Moines and Merle Thornburg of Jacksonville, Ark.; three sisters, Darlene Faux of Des Moines, Wanda Bloodgood of Prole and Evelyn Hitchcock of Rogers, Ark.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
