Jim Shelley, 70, Died On Monday

Had Farmed in Madison County for Nearly 30 Years

Jim Shelley, a resident of Madison county for 30 years, died at the Peterson Nursing home in Winterset Monday, May 9, after several weeks of fatal illness. He had been brought to the local nursing home the preceding day from the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, where he had been a patient for three weeks.

Mr. Shelley was 70 years of age. He was a native of Polk county where he was born March 16, 1879, the son Thomas and Elizabeth (Casebeer) Shelley. He was married at Albany, Mo., to Miss May Heckler of that community. Their early married life was spent in Polk county, with the exception of seven years in Kansas.

They came to Madison county 30 years ago, and Mr. Shelley farmed near Earlham until moving to Winterset in 1946.

Surviving are his wife; a son, C. J. Shelley of Winterset; two daughters, Mrs Mary Akin of Earlham and Mrs. Helen Davis of San Gabriel, Calif.; four grandchildren; a brother, W. M. Shelley of Grimes; and a sister, Mrs. Ora Moss of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Richards funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Paul Diehl, pastor of the Early Chapel church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Jim Shelley Died Last Monday, May 9

Jim Shelley, 70, died at the Peterson nursing home at Winterset, Monday, May 9. He had been a patient at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines for three weeks before being taken to Winterset.

Mr. Shelley farmed near Earlham for many years until 1946 when he and Mrs. Shelley moved to Winterset.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Ramsey funeral home with burial being made in the Winterset cemetery. Rev. Paul Diehl of Early Chapel had charge of the services.

He is survived by his wife, a son, C. J. Shelley of Winterset, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Aikin of Earlham and Mrs. Helen Davis of San Gabriel, California; four grandchildren and a brother and sister.

Mr. Jim Shelley of Winterset died at the Peterson Nursing Home, Winterset, at eight-fifteen o’clock Monday morning, May 9, 1949, following a lengthy illness due to complications. He was 70 years, one month and 23 days of age.

He was born March 16, 1879, near Grimes, Iowa, the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Casebeer Shelley. He spent his early life in Kansas and Missouri. He retired from farming and has lived in Winterset for the past three years.

Surviving are his widow, the former Maggie Mae Hecker, whom he married in 1904; there also survives the following children: Cleo of Winterset, Mrs. Mary Aikin of Earlham, and Mrs. Helen Davis of Los Angeles, California, and four grandchildren. One brother, William Shelley of Grimes, and one half-brother, Isaac Miller of New Virginia, and one sister, Mrs. Ory Moss of Denver, Colorado also survive. Three sisters and one brother preceded Mr. Shelley in death. He is survived by a number of nephews and nieces.

Mr. Shelley spent most of his life in the communities of Clive, Earlham, Van Meter, and Winterset, and he leaves a host of friends and many fond memories of his life in their midst; and the joy and happiness of forty-five years with his help-mate, Mrs. Shelley.

Funeral services were held May 11 at 2 o’clock at Richard Funeral Home, Rev. Paul Diehl, pastor of the Early Chapel church conducting the services.
