Dorothy Fay Smith, 85, died Jan. 15, 2005, at the Regency Care Center in Norwalk.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Booneville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lane Riggle officiating. Burial was at Booneville Cemetery.
Dorothy Smith was born Feb. 22, 1919, to David and Anna (Freeborn) Lathrum of St. Charles. On Sept. 1, 1940, she was united in marriage to Ira S. Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Dorothy was a longtime resident of Lee Township in Madison County, where she had taught school early in her life at Lee Township No. 4. Five years ago, she moved to Norwalk. She was a member of the Booneville United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Van Meter Tuesday Club, Lee Township Farm Bureau, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and Sunshine Garden Club. She also had been a Lee Stars 4-H leader and Blank Guild volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Walter and Sam Lathrum; and a sister, Leah Woodford.
She is survived by two daughters, Connie Waller of Van Meter and Pat Custer of West Des Moines; and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Smith. 85, formerly of Booneville, passed away Saturday, January 15, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Boonville United Methodist Church in Booneville. Burial will be in the Booneville Cemetery.
Dorothy had been a homeworker most of her life and a lifetime resident of Lee Township in Madison County. She had been a teacher early in her life and she loved to garden and go sea shelling on Sanibel Island in Florida. Dorothy was also a Lee Stars 4-H leader, a member of the Booneville United Methodist Church and a Blank Guild Volunteer.
Dorothy is survived by daughters, Connie (Don) Waller of Van Meter and Pat (Ray) Custer of West Des Moines; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira "Bugs" Smith; two brothers; and one sister.
Visitation will be held Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset where her family will be present to greet friends at that time. The family wishes to thank Regency Care Center and Dr. Patricia Newland for taking such good care of her, Memorials may be directed to the Bonneville United Methodist Church or Friends of the Winterset Public Library.
