Winterset Madisonian - Wed., April 10, 1946

Mrs. John Lowden, a life-long resident of Madison county, and member of a pioneer family here, died at her home in Winterset Sunday. She was 79 years of age.

Mrs. Lowden was the former Mary Jane Read, eldest child of Thomas and Anna Read, and was born near Winterset, Sept. 20, 1866. She was married to John Lowden on Dec. 24, 1890.

They went to housekeeping on a farm at Webster, living there and in other Madison county communities until 1918, when they moved to Winterset.

Mrs. Lowden had been a member of the Methodist church since childhood, and took an active part in its affairs.

She is survived by her husband; and three children, Mrs. Grace Jones of Dexter, Ernest Lowden of Truro, and Frank Lowden of Winterset. One child preceded her in death.

She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Hattie Bowlsby of Winterset; a brother, Charles Read of Osawatomie, Kan., six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held here Tuesday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Walter A. Samp. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
