Winterset Madisonian - Wed., February 13, 1946

John Evans of Winterset, a life-long resident of Madison county, died here last Friday after a long illness. He was 74 years of age.

Mr. Evans was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Evans, and was born in Scott township. When he was a young man he bought the home farm from his parents, and they made their home with him in their declining years.

He lived in Scott township for most of his life, but spent a few years near Macksburg before moving into Winterset several years ago.

He was married Feb. 16, 1896 to Hattie A. Davis. They were the parents of two children. The wife and mother died in 1899.

He was married a second time Dec. 21, 1905, to Bertha M. Jessup. Six children were born to them.

He is survived by his wife; and seven children; Henry L. Evans of Van Meter, Mrs. Laura Bell of Macksburg, Mrs. Katherine Palmer, of Winterset, Mrs. Ethel Givan of Macksburg, Charles E. Evans of Winterset, John C. Evans of Des Moines, and Elizabeth Pinckney of Winterset. He also leaves 21 grandchildren; an aged brother of El Dorado Springs, Mo.; a sister of Anaheim, Calif.

Funeral services were held this Monday from Anderson's home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. W. A. Samp of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
