Page 16, Column 4VERN THOMAS Dies At 86
Vern Thomas died Monday, Feb. 23, 1981 at his home in Greenfield, Iowa after a long illness. He was 86 years old.
Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 16, 1894 in Madison County, the son of George C. and Ella Hampton Thomas.
He attended rural schools and continued his education at the former State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He was a farmer and stockman in partnership with his father for many years.
In 1918 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served during World War I.
In January of 1922 he was married to Goldie Handley of Lorimor, Iowa. They had four children -one son and three daughters.
He was a member of the Orient Methodist Church and a 55-year member of the American Legion and the Greenfield Barracks of World War I.
For 30 years he and his wife lived on their farm near Greenfield, but moved into Greenfield in 1978 due to failing health.
Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Harry, Floyd and Dale.
Survivors include his wife, Goldie; son, Gene, of Orient, Ia.; three daughters, Annadell Erb of Marshalltown, Imogene Wilmeth of Des Moines, and Roberta Stoddard of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. Mamie Hammans of Mason City; also nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at the Orient United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Catherina A. Wood officiating. Interment was at Winterset Cemetery.
