Private First Class John Lloyd McClurg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McClurg of rural Earlham, Iowa, lost his life while serving with the United States Army in Viet Nam.
John was born May 1, 1951, in Earlham, Iowa. He attended elementary school in De Soto, and graduated from Adel Community high school with the class of 1969.
Surviving are his parents, Lloyd and Ila McClurg, DeSoto; one brother, Robert McClurg, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and two sisters, Janice Davenport, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Carol Wachter, Earlham. John is also survived by his maternal grandmother, Mabel Bricker of Earlham and one nephew and niece.
He also leaves many relatives and friends.

Another Madison county young man has sacrificed his life in the Vietnamese war.
Pfc. John L. McClurg of rural Earlham was killed in action in Vietnam on Aug. 17, 1970, while serving with the 101st Airborne division, known as "the Screaming Eagles". He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McClurg.
The young soldier was born and spent his brief life in Madison county. He was born May 1, 1951, in Earlham, attended elementary school at DeSoto, and graduated from Adel Community High school with the class of 1969.
He entered military service Aug. 18, 1969, as a volunteer in the U. S. army. He received his basic and advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk, La., receiving the Expert Markmanships medal there
He left here Jan. 19 for assignment overseas, and started his tour of duty at Phu Bai, in Vietnam. There he had received the Combat Infantrymann's medal. Prior to his death, he was hospitalized on two occasions.
He is survived by his parents; a brother, Robert McClurg of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. Janice Davenport of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Carol Wachter of Earlham; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mabel Bricker of Earlham.
Funeral services with military honors were held Sunday from the Adel United Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Potter of Adel and the Rev. Ward Young of Earlham. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
