Obituary
Wallace Gladstone Jackson was born in the home of his great uncle, John Spence, Jackson township, Madison county, Iowa, on October 26, 1893.
He moved to Earlham with his parents in the fall of 1900 and has resided there until called by death at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines, October 24, 1976.
Wallace attended school in Earlham, attending the public school in the building now occupied by the Masonic Temple and the Earlham Historical Society. He graduated from Earlham Academy with the class of 1912. He desired to continue his education and entered Penn college at Oskaloosa, in the fall of 1916. His education was interrupted when called to serve his country in July 1917 and he served until July 1919 when he was given an honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal. He was a charter member of the All American Legion Post 158.
Wallace was in the banking business in Earlham for over 50 years. He began his banking career in the Citizens National Bank under his friend, Harry Hill. He was Cashier of the Earlham Savings Bank for 41 years. Relieved of his duties at the bank in December of 1972, he maintained an office in his home where he continued to serve his community as treasurer of Earlham Community School until force to resign because of ill health in December 1975.
Wallace began attending the Earlham Friends church at the age of 7 and at the age of 13 requested membership where he has attended faithfully. He served his church on many committees and was a long-time treasurer of the church. Just prior to his death he was a member of the Stewardship committee and a member of the Ministry and Counsel. He was a past member of the Friends Retirement Home Board and Quaker Men of Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends.
He was an agent for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. for 35 years and looked forward each spring to when he could contact his many customers and especially enjoyed the visits he had with them.
Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Laura Barnett Jackson, his first wife Margery McLain and an infant granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife Fonda, son William L. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and two daughters: Janet Elizabeth Joyner of Carmel, Indiana and Jane Emeline Drury of Mt. Prospect, Illinois.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren: An Jackson of Liverpool, New York, Stephen Jackson of Chicago, Illinois, Marilyn and Richard Jackson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, William Joyner of Indianapolis, Indiana, John Wallace and Daniel C. Joyner of Carmel, Indiana, and Elizabeth and Susan Drury of Mt. Prospect, Illinois. He had many Barnett first cousins, two of whom are living in Iowa; Marion Compton of Earlham and Mildred DeLay of Perry. He also has three Jackson first cousins living in Scotland.
Wallace loved his God, church, family and community and was a faithful steward in all of Life. We who loved him believe that he too can say as the Apostle Paul said, “The time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have Kept the faith, Henceforth, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
