Winterset Madisonian - Wed., November 15, 1944

Mrs. James T. Tiernan, a long-time resident of Lee township, died last Friday, Nov. 10th, at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Tiernan had been a patient at the hospital for two weeks and a major operation was performed last Friday, which proved fatal that afternoon. She was 68 years of age.

Mrs. Tiernan was a native of Ireland, where she was born in Ballyhaunis in 1876. She came to this county in 1893, and was married to James T. Tiernan in 1907. Since their marriage they had resided on the same farm in Lee township.

She is survived by her husband, four sons, and a daughter, John of Lee township, Giles and Kathryn at home, and Warrent Officer (j.g) James Tiernan of Tallahassee Florida, and S.Sgt. Francis Tiernan who is with the American First army in Germany. Another daughter, Rose, died in 1935.

Mrs. Tiernan is survived by two sisters: Sister Mary Olivia of California, and Mrs. Joseph Harkin of Cumming, and three brothers, Michael Waldron of Cumming and Jim and Thomas Waldron of Des Moines. She is also survivied by two sisters and one brother in Ireland.

The Rev. J. J. Reynolds conducted her funeral services at St. Patrick's church in Lee township, Tuesday morning, and burial was in the church cemetery. All of the children with the exception of the son who is overseas, were able to be home for the services. Warrent Officer Tiernan and his wife of Tallahassee arrived here the first of the week.
