MURRAY SMITH Died Sunday

Memorial funeral services for Murray D. Smith, age 69, were held this Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 1, 1971, from the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. Mr. Smith died at his home west of Winterset early Sunday morning.

A son of Samuel Craig and Myrtle Dabney Smith, he was born in Winterset on Sept. 18, 1901. He graduated from Winterset high school, and attended the University of Iowa for two years.

He received bachelor of arts and law degrees from George Washington University, Washington, D. C.

He lived at Aurora, Illinois for a number of years, where he served as an executive with Commonwealth Edison in Chicago. In 1956 he retired as president of Western Electric utility in Aurora.

He then worked for the Copley Newspapers in Illinois and on the west coast. For the past nine years he had made his home in San Francisco, Calif., moving to Winterset on June 1st of this year.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Murray D. Smith, Jr. of Mill Valley, Calif.; two grandchildren; a brother, Carlton D. Smith of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Mrs. Bryce (Florence) Van Syoc of Godfrey, Ill.; and his mother, Mrs. Sam C. Smith of Bethesda, Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his father, and one brother, Courtney Smith.

Officiating at the service Wednesday was the Rev. John Fink. Interment will be in the Winterset cemetery.
