Charles F. Smith, member of a pioneer Madison county family, died last Friday at his home south of Winterset after a long illness. He was 74 years of age.
The deceased was the son of Stephen and Nancy Elizabeth Clark Smith, and was born in this county on Dec. 3, 1867. His mother was one of the Clanton-Clark band of pioneer settlers in this county. His entire life was spent on the farm in Lincoln township where his death occurred.
He was married on August 18, 1892, to Etna Philips. They were the parents of two children, Mrs. Neta Harrell of Winterset, and Ralph C. Smith of Creston.
He is survived by the wife and two children; two grandchildren, Mrs. Bernice Gray of Winterset and Katherine Joyce Smith of Creston; and one great grandchild, Wilma Gray.
Funeral services were conducted from the Anderson home for funerals in charge of the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Was Resident of Madison County Entire Lifetime. Funeral Sunday.
Charles F. Smith, 74 years of age, died Friday at his home following a long illness. Charlie as he was familiarly known, spent his entire life on the farm in Lincoln township, where he was living at the time of his death.
Charles Franklin Smith was the son of Stephen and Mary Elizabeth Smith and was born in Madison County, December 3, 1867, dying at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 7 days. He was the son of a pioneer family, his mother being one of the group that settled in the county in 1846.
He was united in marriage to Etna Phillips August 18, 1892. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Neta Herrell of Winterset and Ralph C. of Creston.
The surviving relatives are his wife, two children, to grandchildren, Mrs. Bernice Gray of Winterset and Katherine Joyce Smith of Creston; one great-grandchild, Wilma Gray, numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Anderson funeral home Sunday afternoon at two o’clock by the Rev. L. F. Davis. Music was furnished by John Oldham and Mrs. Birdie Wiley. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.
