Winterset Madisonian - Wed., October 4, 1944

Sarah Elizabeth Cowden, daughter of Sarah Ann and David Cowden, was born Jan. 13, 1852, near Cambridge, Ohio coming to Madison county, Iowa in 1857 with her parents in a covered wagon, settling at the old home two miles east of Pitzer where she lived until Nov. 17, 1943, when she went to live with her nephew and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Shaffer. On Jan. 12, 1920, she suffered a fall which left her a cripple the remaining years of her life.

When young she united with the Union Congregational church under the pastorate of Rev. C. T. McCaughan and was a member of the Pitzer church until her death.

She leaves to mourn her going, two sisters, Mrs. Dot Moore of the Peterson nursing home in Winterset, and Mrs. Etna Henderson of Colony, Kan., a number of nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends and neighbors.

(Burial was made in the Stringtown cemetery)
