Wednesday, August 30, 1944Charles Cleland, long-time resident of the Bevington community, died at the Winterset hospital on Tuesday of last week. He was 81 years of age.
Mr. Cleland was born at Indianola on Nov. 27, 1862, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Judkins Cleland. On April 8, 1880, he was married to Frances Siedel. They were the parents of 14 children, all of whom, except a daughter, Maud who died in childhood, survive their father. Mrs. Cleland died in 1919.
The greater part of his life was spent as a farmer in the Bevington neighborhood. For 25 years he lived on a farm south of Bevington.
He is survived by his 13 children, as follows: Mrs. Mable Clopton of Lindsay, Calif., Mrs. Leota Conrad of Knoxville, Mrs. Grace Archer and Lewis Cleland, both of St. Charles, Mrs. Pearl Duffy of Des Moines, Mrs. Mary Hewes of Minneapolis, Clarence Cleland of California, Frank Cleland of Chicago, Thomas Cleland of White Oaks, S. Dak., Mrs. Dorothy Balzar of Des Moines, Mrs. Frances Wissler of East Moline, Ill., Maunt Cleland of the U.S. Navy, and Catherine Cleland of California. He also leaves 23 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. William Carter of Kansas City, and Mrs. Walter Toland.
Funeral services were held last Friday from the Blair Chapel church in charge of the Rev. E. W. Mueller, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Martensdale, and the Rev. Arthur Mortenson, pastor of the Winterset Presbyterian church. Burial was made in Blair Chapel cemetery.
