Charles S. Crawford

Charles Seigle Crawford, son of Oliver and Lucinda Crawford, was born in Crawford township, Madison county, Iowa, on June 23, 1860.

His parents were among the earliest settlers in Crawford township and when the county was organized, this township was named for his father. His boyhood was spent in the home neighborhood, and he was married to Ida May Davis on March 7, 1882. To them seven children were born. Three of the children died when quite young and one daughter, Bessie May, died when twenty years of age. Those living are: Mrs. Lucinda Lavalleur, of Winterset; Squire, of Des Moines, and Mrs. Cleo Douglas, of Chile, South America.

After their marriage they lived on the farm for many years and later moved to Winterset, where they lived for ten years. After that they returned to the farm. His work helping farmers with their stock, took him all over the county and nearly every farmer came to know and appreciate Charlie Crawford.

He had been for many years a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Patterson. His parents were United Presbyterians and he was brought up in their faith. While not a member of the church, he was always in sympathy with religious work.

He passed away after a number of months of illness at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, on August 12th, 1930, at the age of 70 years. He leaves beside his wife and children, one granddaughter, Carolyn Crawford Wade; one brother, Wiley Crawford, of Patterson and other relatives and many friends.

Rev. E. O. Douglas, father-in-law of the daughter in Chile, came from Shelby to conduct the service which was held at Tidrick’s funeral home, Thursday afternoon, August 14th. The Odd Fellows Lodges of Winterset and Patterson escorted the procession to Montpelier cemetery, north of Patterson, where the Winterset lodge conducted the grave services.
