Lafayette M. Foster, son of a pioneer Madison county family and a widely known Winterset citizen for many years, died July 1 at the age of 83 years.

Mr. Foster was born June 24, 1861, on his father's farm here, and his early life was spent there. He learned a number of trades, and for a time operated a meat market at Peru, and later in Winterset. He was employed in St. Paul, Minn., a number of years, and in Des Moines, where he took up the barber trade. For the past 16 years his home had been in Winterset. Here he worked for the Lavalleur Oil company until Ed Lavalleur retired from business.

He was a member of the Methodist church, and of the Order of Masons.

He is survived by five sisters and two brothers, as follows: Mrs. Mary Lorimor of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Ida Robinson of Peru, Mrs. Ada Boling of Des Moines, Mrs. Cora Orr of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. Alice Robinson of Winterset, E. T. Foster of Salem, Ore., and J. M. E. Creger of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday from Anderson's Funeral home in charge of the Rev. L. F. Davis. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery with the Masonic lodge assisting with the rites.

LAST RITES FOR LAFE M. FOSTER

Lifelong Resident Of This Community Died Saturday At Age Of 83.

Lafayette M. Foster, 83-year-old lifelong resident of Madison county, died Saturday at the home of Mrs. Della Lavalleur following an illness of two months. Lafe as he was known to a greater part of the citizens of the county was a member of a pioneer family of this community, Nathaniel and Margaret Foster, who made their home in Walnut township. He was born June 24, 1861 and lived nearly his entire life in Madison county.

His early years were spent on his father’s farm, and while still a young man he developed several trades. For a number of years he operated a meat market in Peru and later in Winterset. He was employed in St. Paul, Minnesota, for some time and then returned to Winterset where he was employed in the oil business. For the past sixteen years he had made his home with Mrs. Della Lavalleur and family and was employed at the Lavalleur Oil Company here until Ed Lavalleur retired from the oil business.

He was a member of the Methodist church since 1922 in a member of the Masonic lodge. He received his schooling in the Walnut township schools.

He is survived by five sisters, and two brothers. The sisters, Mrs. Mary Lorimor of Long Beach, California; Mrs. Ida Robinson of Peru; Mrs. Ada Boling of Des Moines; Mrs. Alice Robinson of this city and Mrs. Cora Orr of St. Paul, Minnesota. The brothers: E. T. Foster of Salem, Oregon, and J. M. E. Creger of Winterset.

Funeral services were conducted at the Anderson funeral home Monday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. L. F. Davis. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
