Julianne Hughes, Winterset

Julianne Hughes, 57, a former Glendale, Ariz., resident, died of cancer April 8, 2001 at the Winterset home of her daughter, Jennifer Cooper.

A memorial reception will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Isaac Walton League in Des Moines. Burial of the cremains will take place in Ida Grove at a later date.

Julianne Hughes was born Aug. 29, 1943 in Fort Dodge to George and Dolores (Mattice) Henry Sr. She worked in the U.S. Senate in Washington, D.C. in the early 1970s. She and her first husband, Lennie Holm, returned to Iowa with their family to reside in Creston. In 1987, she married her second husband, former Iowa Governor and U.S. Senator Harold Hughes, in Phoenix. Following his death in 1996, she fulfilled his national speaking engagements on alcohol and drug treatment issues. She also was a realtor in Glendale.

She was preceded in death by her father and husband.

She is survived by her mother, Dolores Henry of Des Moines; two daughters, Jennifer Cooper (husband Terry) of Winterset and Jacqueline Holm-Smith (husband Darrell Smith) of Ankeny; a son, Hans Christian Holm of Phoenix, Ariz.; six brothers, Michael Henry of Minneapolis, Minn., Robin Henry of Midland, Texas, Patrick Henry of Grapevine, Texas, Mark Henry of Cedar Falls and Stephen Henry and Timothy Henry, both of Des Moines; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Greater Community Hospital in Creston or Middle River Hospice in Winterset.

Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
