Bernard Hughes, St. Charles

Bernard "Ben" R. Hughes, 76, of St. Charles, died of a heart attack Feb. 5, 2003 at his home.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Truro with the Rev. Roselyn Harbart officiating. Burial of the cremains will take place at a later date at Garner Cemetery, Bridgewater.

Ben Hughes was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Adair County (Richland Township) to Roy Wesley and Vera Ione (Sickels) Hughes. A graduate of Bridgewater High School, he also received a computer science degree from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. On Jan. 2, 1955, he married Dorthy Elizabeth Copeland at the Bridgewater Christian Church. Ben had been a truck driver, most recently for Werner Enterprises. He retired in 1985. He was a resident of St. Charles for the past 11 years and of Truro for 20 years prior to moving to St. Charles. He was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge in Bridgewater, Lions Club of Truro and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Martensdale. He also had been a Boy Scout leader and softball coach and was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Dorthy of St. Charles; three daughters, Duly Zwiefel of Ankeny; Dori Hughes of Adair and Dana Warren of St. Charles; a son, David Hughes of Truro; a brother, Wayne Hughes of Garden Grove; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were handled by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.
