Robert "Bob" Howell, 65, of Winterset, died of cancer Oct. 6, 1997 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services will be held Oct. 9 at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. The Rev. John Shaull will officiate the 10 a.m. services with burial following at the Winterset Cemetery. American Legion Post 184 will conduct military honors. Visitation is today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset.
He was born to Clarence and Nettie (Thrailkill) Howell in Douglas Township Madison County on August 24, 1932. He married Patricia Lipe on April 16, 1955 at Mt. Clemens, Mich. He farmed regularly and was a mail carrier for the Winterset Post Office for 28 years before retiring in 1983. He was an alcohol and drug counselor for 8 years at the Madison County Alcohol and Drug Services. He served four full terms as the mayor of Winterset, as well as serving in the United States Air Force. He also was a member of the American Legion for 42 years. He helped to establish the Winterset Chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous and was a member for 21 years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Patricia Howell of Winterset; two sons, David Howell and wife Kim of Winterset, Steven Howell and wife Elizabeth of Des Moines; three daughters, Susan Sorenson of Winterset, Diana Moothart of Winterset, Linda Howell of Rapid City, S.D.; one sister Betty Dalton of Iowa City; one brother, Ronald Howell of Winterset; and 15 grandchildren.
