Winterset, Iowa
Wednesday, July 29, 1942Alverdo Cox, 21-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Casper Cox of near Winterset, was drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming in a pond on the H. H. Wipperman farm in Union township.
Cox, who could not swim, was wading in the Wipperman pond Sunday. He was accompanied in the water by two companions, Carl Josephsen of Greenfield and Harold Bruett of Winterset. Both the latter could swim a little. Bert Newbury had accompanied them to the pond, but did not go in the water.
Shortly after wading into the pond, Cox slipped into water over his head. Bruett and Josephsen attempted to pull him out, but were not equal to the task. Bruett grappled with the drowning youth, and was himself almost drowned in the struggle.
Bert Newbury was dispatched to the Wipperman home to call for help. A short while later, before this help could arrive, Arthur Newbury happened along. He immediately dived in and recovered the body.
The youth had been in the water about a half hour. Sheriff A. E. Null and a physician arrived soon with the Winterset fire department's inhalator, but all efforts to revive the victim failed.
Casper Alverdo Cox, son of Casper and Hanah Cox, was born Aug. 2, 1920, in this county. He attended the rural schools of the county and the Winterset high school, graduating with the class of 1941. He was well known and well liked throughout this community, and his sudden death brought genuine grief to a wide circle of friends and former schoolmates.
He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Chew and Mrs. Burla Beaman; one brother, Lee Cox; and his grandmother, Mrs. Ida Palmer.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Anderson home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. Reed Kessler. Burial was made in the McDonald cemetery.
