Word has been received here of the death of Charles E. Rumford, former Madison county resident, at Ottawa, Kan. Mr. Rumford was 61 years of age, and was born and raised on a farm west of Winterset. He died Sept. 30th.

He is survived by his wife, who was the former Miss Gertrude Niblo of Madison county, and their five children, all of whom reside in Kansas.

The Rev. J. M. Torrence, pastor of the Wellsville Methodist church conducted his funeral servies at the Lyon Funeral home in Ottawa Friday, Oct. 2nd, and burial was made in the Ottawa cemetery. More details of his life will be given in next week's issue of the Madisonian.

Those going from here to attend the services were Sherman Baker, Mrs. George Black and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Niblo.

Charles Everett Rumford, 60, retired farmer, died early Wednesday, Sept. 30th, at his home in Ottawa, Kan. He had been in failing health three years, and died from a stroke of paralysis suffered Sept. 23.

Mr. Rumford was born Oct. 17, 1881, in Mahaska county, Iowa, son of Palmer and Anna Belle Soutts Rumford. On September 24, 1903, he was married to Gertrude Mabel Niblo at Winterset.

Surviving relatives are the widow, a son and four daughters: Alton L. Rumford and Mrs. H. L. Price, of Ottawa; Mrs. Lyle Hilbert of Burlington, Kansas, and the Misses Bertha and Frances Rumford at home. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters, Lawrence Rumford of Portland, Oregon, Dale Rumford and Mrs. Joe M. Spurgin of Eugene, Oregon, Mrs. Harold Hill of College Springs, and Mrs. Fred Garrettson of Vallejo, California, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Rumford were held at the Lyon funeral home in Ottawa, Oct. 2nd, and burial was made in the cemetery there.

Coordinator's note: Of the two places of birth mentioned here, the "Mahaska County" location is most likely correct. The family was found living in Mahaska County in the 1885 Iowa State Census and the deceased was listed therein as being born there. The 1895 census has most of the family being born in Scott County which seems very unlikely. His place of birth was not found elsewhere except for the two censuses and these two obituaries.
