Richard L. Houston, a well-known resident of the St. Charles community, died Saturday, May 27, at Veterans hospital in Des Moines. He was 45 years of age.

Mr. Houston was a life-long resident of the St. Charles community. He was born there Nov. 21, 1926, a son of Harry and Kathryn Luke Houston. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He operated a produce business in St. Charles for many years, but for the last seven years had served as a custodian in the Interstate 35 Community schools where he was unusually popular both with the children and staff members. The Interstate schools closed for his funeral services.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at St. Marys, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus at Indianola. He was affiliated with the St. Charles post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and with the Madison County association for Retarded Children.

Surviving are two daughters, Teresa and Beth Houston, a brother, Franklin Houston of Des Moines and two sisters, Mrs. Arnetha Bock of Chicago and Mrs. Mary Griffith of Winterset.

Rosary was recited this Monday evening at his home in St. Charles. The requiem mass was held this Tuesday from the Catholic church at St. Marys, conducted by the Rev. Fr. Clark. Burial was made in the St. Marys cemetery, with military ritual at the grave-side by the St. Charles post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
