MRS. E. R. (HARRIETT) TOMPKINS of Winterset Dies

Mrs. Ernest Tompkins, a well known resident of this community for more than half a century died Wednesday, July 4, 1962, at Memorial hospital in Winterset, after a brief illness. She was 82 years of age.

Mrs. Tompkins was born at Red Oak May 31, 1880. She was the former Harriett Bell Haney, daughter of Edward and Cora Chickering Haney. She was married there on Jan. 31, 1900 to Ernest R. Tompkins.

They had lived in Madison county for 57 years. During her long residence in Winterset she was active in the Methodist church, including the Women's Society for Christian Service. She was a member of the Columbian club, Qui Vive club, and the W.C.T.U.

Surviving are her husband; four children, Mrs. Iva T. Giddings of Long Beach, Calif., Edward R. Tompkins of San Carlos, Calif., Mrs. Mabel E. Klaaren of Moscow, Ida., and F. Vernon Tompkins of Cedar City, Utah. She also leaves seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. May Tompkins of Ft. Madison.

Funeral services were held last Friday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. John C. Porath, and a former pastor, Rev. W. A. Samp. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
