FREEDA VAN GINKEL, Winterset

Funeral services for Freeda M. Van Ginkel, 83, Winterset, were held Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset with the Rev. Bob Epperson and Rev. Dan Berry officiating. Interment was in the Winterset Cemetery.

Mrs. Van Ginkel died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1987, at home in Winterset of congestive heart failure.

Born in Warren County, south of Liberty Center, she was married to W. Reed Kessler in 1920. They pastored Methodist Congregational Churches from 1923 to 1948 in Wyoming, Colorado and south central Iowa. Following Rev. Kessler's death in 1950, she was married to John Van Ginkel of Des Moines who died in 1962.

She worked one year as a housemother in a boy's dormitory at Simpson College and 28 years as a housemother for student nurses at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, retiring in 1979. She had been a Winterset resident for the past 3 years and had previously lived in Indianola

Survivors include two sons, Leo Kessler of Audubon and the Rev. Galen Kessler of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a daughter, Marie Stanley of Earlham; a brother, Homer Sones of Clinton; a sister, Neva Miller of Indianola; two stepsons, Marvin and Jack, both of Des Moines; two stepdaughters, Mary Wheeler of Des Moines and Charlotte Monical of Bettendorf; 25 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
