HARRY VANCE Died Friday

William Harrison (Harry) Vance, member of a well known Winterset family and a life-long resident of this community, died Friday, March 12, 1971, at Memorial hospital. He was 81 years of age.

Mr. Vance had served as a clerk in the Winterset postoffice for 47 years, prior to his retirement in 1956.

He was a son of Walter H. and Lucy May Nichols Vance, and was born in the Worthington community May 2, 1889. His father served as Winterset postmaster for a long period of years, and also was elected to the state legislature from Madison county.

He moved to Winterset with his family early in life, and attended Winterset High school entering the postal service here on Oct. 1, 1909, when he was 20 years of age.

He was married March 18, 1914, to Sarah Elsie Young. Her death occurred in 1956. Mr. Vance was a member of the Methodist church.

He is survived by a son. W. Eugene Vance of Gary, Ind.; a granddaughter, Pamela Vance of Gary; a sister, Mrs. Mary Barr of Winterset; and three brothers, George Vance of Winterset; Lynn Vance of Des Moines; and Robert Vance of Sidney.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Newton Coughenour, pastor of the First United Methodist church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
