WAR INVADES MADISON COUNTY

GEORGE HOLT Dies in Trenches, Was Fighting With Canadian Forces.

The first Madison county boy to surrender his life in the trenches in France was George Holt, the son of Ed Holt, formerly of this county, but now living near Edmonton, Canada.

A message came Saturday to Mrs. Gile Macumber, a daughter of Mr. Holt, that her brother died in action October 30th, 1917, and a letter came Monday, verifying the telegram. No details came as to the nature of his death, but it is known that he had been in the first line trenches for the past ten months.

Twelve months ago young Holt enlisted with the Canadian expeditionary forces and has seen active service for the greater part of the time. He was but nineteen years old and although his family moved from this county several years ago, no doubt many former schoolmates and friends of the Holts will sorrow at his death.

It has been a matter of much discussion as to how and when the world war would cause a fatality in Madison county's war roll, but now that it has come to George Holt, fighting bravely in the front line, we as a community, must feel that this war is a part of our burden and we are very near it, after all, though half a world away.
