Guy Holmes, 82, Dies at Hampton

Funeral Mass was offered by the Rev. W. A. Goltz at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hampton, Iowa on October 26, 1972 at 10:00 a.m. for Guy Holmes, 82. Burial rites were conducted at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Clarion, Iowa.

Kenneth Guy Holmes died October 24, 1972 at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton, following a long illness. He was born November 25, 1889 near Truro in Madison County, the only son of James M. and Anna Carter Holmer. Guy's parents came from Ohio with their parents in covered wagons, settling in Ohio township in 1857. He received his schooling in rural schools of the County. As a young man, Guy worked in Des Moines, sorting furs in a fur buying house some winters, later going to Wright County to work as a hired hand on farms, later farming for himself.

On September 25, 1918 he was united in marriage with Mary Catherine (Katie) Russell at St. John's Catholic Church in Clarion, Iowa.

They made their first home on a farm near Winterset. They moved by train to farm south of Clarion and farmed there 17 years before moving to the Eagle Grove community until 1943, when they moved to a farm near Rockford, Iowa. Later they moved to the Nashua, Iowa community and into Nashua upon retirement.

Since the death of his wife in 1968, he had made his home with his children, with his main residence being with one of his sons and family, Max of Hampton.

He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton and of the Farm Bureau.

Surviving are four sons and four daughters; Kenneth J. of rural Clarion; Donald T. of Huron, South Dakota; Max J. of Hampton; Dean M. of Garden Grove, California; Lynette, Mrs. Glenn Winton of Marble Rock, Iowa; Elizabeth, Mrs. Rudolph Juckem of Inglewood, California; Mary Lee, Mrs. James Sutherland of Seal Beach, California; Winnifred, Mrs. Everett Cundall of Galt, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Hilma Perkins of Clinton, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and three sisters.
