Mrs. W. A. Sawhill, well known resident of Madison county, died at her home southwest of Truro, Monday, May 10, 1954, after an extended illness. Mrs. Sawhill, who was 66 years of age, had lived all of her life with the exception of a few years, when she was a child, in this county, and the Sawhill farm in Ohio township had been her home for the past 36 years.
Mary Ethel Travis, daughter of Eliza Alice and Thomas Hamlin Travis, was born December 3, 1887, at Peru. She traveled to Kansas with her family by train at the age of three months, later returning to Madison county by covered wagon when she was 7 years of age.
She was married to William A. Sawhill Jan. 1, 1907, and they were the parents of five children, all of whom survive her; four daughters, Berniece Phillips of Peru, Ardys Whitfield of Topeka, Kan., and the one son, Verle, at home.
She united with the Peru Methodist church in early childhood, later transferring to the Truro church, where for many years she was an active member of the Philathean Sunday school class, and the Womens Society of Christian Service. She was also active in the Truro Garden club and the Oak Run Community Circle.
She is survived by her husband, her mother, the children, ten grandchildren and her brothers, Delwin Travis of Truro, and Warren, Elwood and Donald Travis of Winterset. Her father, a sister, Lena, and an infant brother, Wayne preceded her in deaath.
The Rev. Clarence Moore conducted the funeral services for Mrs. Sawhill at the Truro Methodist church Thursday, May 13, at two o'clock, and burial was made in the Ebenezer cemetery.
