CARL E. PETERSON
Carl “Pete” Peterson passed away May 24, 2005 at Kavanagh House, Des Moines, Iowa. He was 89 years of age.

Carl was born December 7, 1915, in Farmer City, Illinois to Berta Snow Montgomery and Renald Charles Peterson. He grew up in and around Hardin and Marshall counties in Iowa where his grandparents Montgomery resided. In late 1934 he worked with the CCC-the government program to put people to work-most of the work was done in state parks around Iowa. He joined the National Guard in 1938. While working at the Milner Hotel in Des Moines as a “bell boy” he married Mary Isabell Wehrle in 1940 and they had two daughters, Marilyn and Suzanne.

Carl joined the Navy in 1943 and served in the pacific area, Hawaii, Guam, Philippines. He was a radar instructor and taught swimming. He never tired of telling his service stories and his family never tired of hearing them.

He worked for Rock Island Railroad after returning home. In 1946 he began driving a truck, moving to Earlham in 1947 and started Peterson Motor Freight of which he was owner/operator until retirement in 1970’s to become supervisor of operations at Lakeview Golf and Country Club until his retirement from there in late 1980’s. Golfing was his passion but he also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and watching all sports. He was the best cook in the family. Carl was a former Earlham City Councilman.
