Evelyn Hollen, 91, of Winterset died of cancer June 3, 2000, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Burial of the cremains will be at Winterset Cemetery with a graveside service to be held at a later undetermined date.

Evelyn Hollen was born Jan. 16, 1909 in Decatur County to Ole H. and Mabel (Sawyer) Hollen. Graduating from Winterset High School in 1925 with a Normal Training Course, she taught at Webster Center and Harvard rural schools for three and one-half years. She later received her BS in dietetics in 1934 and served as dietitian and matron at the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute from 1935-37. She then went into extension work for five years as a home demonstration agent in Cass and Adair counties. After earning her master's degree in nutrition in 1942 at Penn State University, she accepted a position as the first State of Iowa Nutritionist in the Department of Health in Des Moines. Following World War II, she served as a dietitian at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. In 1963, Evelyn earned her doctorate of science degree from Iowa State University. She served on the faculties of Iowa State College and four other universities, retiring in 1974. A veteran of World War II, she also was a member of the Winterset Sunshine Garden Club, Madison County Women's Democratic Club and the First United Methodist Church in Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters.

She is survived by two nieces, Jeanne Hollen Rafdal of Des Moines and Maxine Hollen Hudson of Winter Park, Fla.; two nephews, Eric Hollen of Winterset and Mike Hollen of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Lucille of Winterset; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
