DEATH OF L. LOWE

Furniture Dealer And Undertaker Succumbs After Long Illness

Laclede Lowe, for many years a furniture dealer and undertaker of Winterset, died at his home, on west Washington, Thursday, July 30th, after an extended illness. Mr. Lowe who was 77 years of age, had resided in Winterset, the past fifty years.

Mr. Lowe was a son of John and Margaret Lowe and was born near Monmouth, Illinois, on February 14, 1852. He attended Monmouth college, and then came to Madison county. Here he was married to Miss Laura Buchanan, September 1, 1880. In 1882, he purchased the furniture store on the east side of the square, and was engaged in this and the undertaking business, until 1905.

The Lowes were the parents of two children, Mrs. Fred Danforth and Mrs. Clyde Crossley of Winterset and Mrs. Lowe died in 1911. In 1917 he was married to Miss Kittie Shannon, who with the children survive him. He also leaves three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Rees of Gerlaw, Illinois, and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Shenandoah.

The Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church conducted his funeral services, at the home, Saturday morning, August 1, at 10 o’clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The pall bearers were Judge W. S. Cooper, Alvin Shriver, J. Wesley Smith, Will Guiher, Fred Hartsook and Alf Danforth.

LACLEDE LOWE DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Prominent Business Man Many Years. Active in Civic Affairs

Laclede Lowe, 79, retired furniture dealer and undertaker, died Thursday morning about eleven o’clock at his home on west Washington street. He had been in poor health since the first of the year and no hope had been held for his recovery for several weeks.

The Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church conducted the services Saturday morning at ten o’clock at the home; burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Lowe was for many years a prominent business man of Winterset. He was one of the organizers of the Madison County State bank, was active in the Business Men’s association which was formed during the years he was in business, and was one of the leaders of the good roads movement in Madison county. He was a Mason and a Knight Templar. In 1905 on account of ill health Mr. Lowe sold his furniture and undertaking business to J. A. Ramsey, afterwards devoting his time to farming.

He was the son of John and Margaret Lowe and was born near Monmouth, Illinois, February 14, 1852, the youngest of a family of eight children. He attended Monmouth college, coming to Winterset in 1882 where his marriage to Miss Laura Buchanan took place September 1, 1880. Two daughters were born to them, Mrs. Fred Danforth and Mrs. C. C. Crossley. Mrs. Lowe died June 29, 1911. He was married to Miss Kittie Shannon January 3, 1917.

He is survived by his wife, his daughters, three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Margarete Rees Gerlow of Illinois; and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Shenandoah.
