MORTUARY

William Cyrus Rhodes

William Cyrus Rhodes, youngest son of James S. and Eliza F. Rhodes, was born at Bloomington, Illinois, September 15, 1853, and departed this life February 3, 1931, at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 18 days. He came to Iowa when but a small boy, settling in the district known then as Hoosier Prairie. He knew the trials and hardships as only a pioneer can know, but went on with undaunted courage.

On April 27, 1875, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Hutton, and spent more than 55 years in companionship. He was always a true and devoted husband and father. To this union there were born 13 children. Two sons, Harry and Charles, have preceded him in death.

Those remaining are his wife, Mary E. Rhodes; six sons, James W. of Los Angeles, Elmer E., Detroit, Michigan, Earl H. of Dayton, Ohio, Paul L. of Des Moines, Mrs. Cliff Smith of Omaha, Mrs. Roy Cline of Des Moines, Mrs. T. N. Linge of Decatur, Illinois, Mrs. Cain Bishop and Mrs. Arthur Strong of Winterset. All were with him during his last illness, except James, who on account of ill health, was not able to be present. Mrs. Mattie Soderland of Des Moines, his youngest sister, is the only surviving one of his father’s family. There are 21 grandchildren and 8 great grand sons.

When but a young man he became a member of the Christian church at Norwalk in 1874, later transferring his membership to the Church of Christ at Winterset. He was a firm believer in God. His love and respect for his fellow men were manifest in all his dealings. He had been in fading health for several years, but he was not one to dwell upon his own ills. He was a patient sufferer and in his last lingering illness he thought more of others than of himself.
