Winterset Madisonian - Wednesday, January 16, 1946

Mrs. Arthur C. Barr, a long time resident of Douglas township, died here Sunday at the age of 74 years. Death came suddenly while she was attending services at the United Presbyterian church.

Mrs. Barr was the former Annie M. Sawhill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sawhill, and was born April 16, 1871, near Mansfield, O. Following the death of her father, when she was 5 years old, she came to Madison county to live with her uncle, the Rev. James Sawhill. She was a member of that home until her marriage to Arthur C. Barr on April 1, 1890.

The first years of their married life were spent in Penn and Jackson townships, but during the 38 years prior to Mr. Barr's death, three years ago, they lived three miles northwest of Winterset in Douglas township. Since the death of her husband, she had lived in Winterset.

Mr. and Mrs. Barr were the parents of seven children, the oldest of whom, Lily, died in childhood. The surviving children are: Mrs. Howard Criss and Glen Barr of Lorimor, Mrs. Hazel Cox, Lloyd Barr and Mrs. Bessie Hooper of Winterset, and Mrs. Elsie Benson of Canton, S. Dak. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was a long-time member of the Pitzer U. P. church, and later of the U. P. church in Winterset.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Anderson home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. W. P. Gordon. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.
