LIFE LOST AT MACKSBURG

Townsend’s Store Burns Up, and the Fire Causes a Fatal Explosion

THOMAS WHITWORTH DIES OF INJURIES

Transcriber’s Note: The headlines were followed by an extensive story on the fire and explosion, culminating in Thomas Whitworth’s obituary.

Mr. Whitworth was born in Cambridgeshire, England October 2d, 1837, being at his death sixty-one years, seven months and twenty-three days old. His funeral occurred Friday, June 2d. Rev. D. Martin delivered the address to one of the largest and most sympathizing audiences that has assembled here for some time. Mr. Whitworth has been a respected resident of this locality for thirty-three years; was married to Hulda J. Johnson December 19th, 1867. Of the five children of their family only three, who were present at his funeral, survive him; thus leaving a wife and three children to mourn his loss. He united with the M. E. church of this place in the spring of 1898. Besides his own family he leaves a number of brothers and sisters behind, a part of whom live in this community.

Wm. Whitworth was called home from Des Moines, where he was taking medical treatment, to attend his brother's funeral.

While the citizens were fighting the fire an explosion occurred, the walls collapsed and caught a number of persons.
