LOYD U. WAECHTER A HERO

Loyd U. Waechter was born in Peru, Aug. 26, 1895, and died in Base Hospital No. 15, in France, sometime between July 28th and August 2nd, 1918 - aged almost 23 years.

He lived all his life in Peru with the exception of one year that he spent in Oregon and Washington with his parents and six months in Avoca, Iowa, when his parents moved back to Peru to make their home.

He enlisted April 4th, 1917, in Company A 168th Inf. Was called to service July 1st and was in camp at Winterset till Aug. 17, and was ordered to Des Moines on that date and remained in camp until Sept. 9th, when the regiment entrained for Camp Mills, Long Island. Left Camp Mills for France November 14. Landed in England on Thanksgiving night, and landed on French soil Dec. 15th. Saw his first battle March 5th, 1918, when he was the first Peru boy to go into the trenches, and saw continuous hard service from that date.

In writing his mother, Mrs. Lillie Waechter, and sister and brother, he always spoke cheerfully, and told them if anything happened to him it would be alright with him.
