Veteran of World War II Was Serving in Seventh Infantry Division.
Word was received on Wednesday of last week that Cpl. James A. Harrell of Winterset had been killed in action in Korea, in battle against the Communist forces. The telegraphic message was received by his wife, Roberta Harrell of Winterset. The letter of confirmation from the U. S. War department was received here Monday.
Corporal Harrell was a veteran of World War II, and since its close had been a member of the U. S. army reserves. He was recalled to active duty Sept. 19, 1950. After a training period of one month, he was sent overseas to Japan. There he was assigned to the Seventh Infantry Division.
He had been in battle almost continuously since Nov. 1, 1950. He survived the terrible North Korean campaign that closed with the evacuation of Hamhung. Since then, his division had been fighting the Communists on the South Korean front.
Corporal Harrell met his death on Feb. 4, 1951. On that day he had written a letter to his wife from the battlefield. In this letter, he said that he could see the fighting up ahead. His death evidently occurred shortly after he had posted the letter. Mrs. Harrell received the letter the day before the casualty telegram arrived.
James A. Harrell was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Harrell of Scott township. He was born near Winterset March 22, 1926, and sent his entire life in this community, with the exception of his time in service. Shortly after graduating from the Winterset high school, he entered the U. S. army in 1943, and served until the end of the war in 1945. He was a member of the First Cavalry division, and saw action in its campaigns in the Pacific theater.
On Sept. 12, 1949, he was married to Roberta Miller of Winterset. They were the parents of a baby daughter, Karla Marie, who is now just three months old. The soldier father was never privileged to see his baby daughter.
In addition to his wife, daughter and parents, Corporal Harrell is survived by a son by a former marriage, James Arthur Harrell. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Robert Jamison of Winterset, and a brother, Louis W. Harrell at home.
Memorial services for Corporal Harrell will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m., in the Winterset Methodist church, Green-Rogers post of the American Legion will participate, with appropriate ritual.
