Lydia Lavina Andrus, daughter of Wm. H. and Mary Bailey Andrus was born in DeRuyter, New York on January 4, 1850. She was one of a family of nine children, all of whom preceded her in death.

She was married to Edwin L. de Clercq December 25, 1870; to this union three children were born, Mrs. Maude Rose of Winterset, Edwin who died in infancy, and Charles L. of Visalia, California.

Mr. and Mrs. de Clercq came to Iowa in 1873 and located on a farm in Madison county, three miles south of De Soto and remained on the same farm until the death of Mr. de Clercq on June 8, 1895. Soon after coming to Iowa she united with the Christian Church of which denomination she remained a consistent member throughout her life.

In 1898 she was united in marriage to James A. Travis; and they made their home in De Soto until his passing into the beyond in February 1922. Soon after his death she moved to Earlham. For the past six years she has made her home with her daughter Mrs. Rose, from whose home she departed this life November 5, 1936 after a prolonged illness, age 86 years and ten months.

She leaves to mourn her going on to the beyond, one daughter, and one son, three step-daughters and two step-sons; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Of grandmother Travis it can truthfully be said, “She hath done what she could.”

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 7, at the Methodist church in De Soto. Burial was at De Soto.
