WHILE LEADING NIGHT PATROL

Fourth Battle Death of This War in Madison County

The tragedy of the Korean war struck home in Madison county again this week when Mr. and Mrs. W. Clifford Lienemann of Jefferson township were notified that their son, Sgt. Virgil B. Lienemann, was killed in action in Korea on March 10.

The young man was serving in Korea with the First Marine division. He met his death while leading a night patrol against the enemy.

Sergeant Lienemann was 20 years of age. He had been in service more than two years, enlisting in the Marine Corps on Feb. 8, 1951. He had been overseas since Dec. 20, 1952.

He was the fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. Lienemann to have served overseas with the armed forces.

Sergeant Lienemann was a life-long resident of Madison county. He was born Nov. 6, 1932, at their farm home in Jefferson township. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Jefferson township. He attended the DeSoto school, graduating from high school there with the class of 1951. He was married Sept. 17, 1951, to Betty Leach of Waukee.

In addition to his wife and his parents, he leaves seven brothers and three sisters: W. Clifford Lienemann, Jr., at home, Peter T. Lienemann of Van Meter, Sgt. Lyle H. Lienemann of Randolph Field, Tex., Mrs. Luke Boone of Iowa City, Lawrence E. Lienemann, who has just returned from Germany, Elmer E. Lienemann of Lexington, Nebr., and Lowell, John, Clara and Edna Lienemann, all at home.

Sgt. Lienemann is the fourth Madison county service man to have been killed in battle during the Korean war. The first was Cpl. James A. Harrell of Winterset, who was killed Feb. 4, 1951. Pfc. Robert E. Enright of Douglas township was killed Jan. 25, 1952; and Pfc. Wayne Martens of Madison township died in battle Sept. 21, 1952.

Memorial services will be held for Sgt. Lienemann at the Jefferson Lutheran church after the body is returned to this country.

Note 1: Burial at Trinity Lutheran cemetery.

Note 2: Correction from family member - Sgt. Lyle H. Lienemann is incorrect, should be Sgt. Nile H. Lienemann.
